Spring Fling a Success!
The Friends of Coonley are happy to announce that the 4th Annual Spring Fling was a success!
We met our fundraising goal of $50,000 (net) — money that will go directly to Coonley School to help fund academic programs and staff!

A huge thank you is due to everyone who bought tickets, made donations, purchased items and volunteered their time. Over 400 people bought tickets to Spring Fling this year; our highest total yet! And from all the laughter and talking in the room, it would seem that a good time was had by all.

Purchase Giving Tree Items
For those of you who were not able to attend, those who did not win that special basket or tickets, or those who would like to give more, we have a special opportunity:
Our Giving Tree items did not sell out and we are making them available online for purchase! Help us fill the classrooms with supplies, materials and resources requested by Coonley teachers. Click here to purchase Giving Tree items.
Finally, the next FOC monthly meeting is Wednesday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All are welcome! We will be discussing feedback from the auction, in addition to other items. If you have feedback on the auction that you would like to share, please feel free to come to the meeting, or email friendsofcoonley@yahoo.com.
Thank you again!

Hi Parents, Friends, and Neighbors,

As you know, John C. Coonley Elementary School is nearing the end of a large renovation project, and the changes to the school are wonderful. So much has been updated; however, many things that are needed are not in the budget. For example, a new Library/Media Resource Center is being built, but this expansion does not include bookshelves, furniture, or books.

A group of individuals, made up of the Local School Council (LSC), the Friends of Coonley School (FOC), the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), and a dedicated group of supportive community members and parents are working together to raise funds to pay for outfitting the new Library/Media Resource Center. We sincerely hope that you can be a part of creating this new center and making John C. Coonley Elementary one of the premier schools in Chicago!

We have had an amazing response since starting this campaign earlier this summer. If you have already contributed to the Library please accept our heartfelt thanks! If you have not previously donated, there is still time.

And thank you for your continued generosity and support!

Hello Everyone,
The end of the school year is nearly here! What a successful year 2007-2008 has been for the John C. Coonley School. Our 3rd Annual Spring Fling Silent Auction and Fundraiser was a huge success — we netted $45,000, all of which will be used to fund existing and new programs at the school as well as purchase supplies, furniture and equipment to supplement the work being done with the capital funds we received. The Friends of Coonley has a busy summer planned. We have our annual Fall Fun Fair coming up in September and prior to that we will be hosting a series of other events, so stay tuned to this space and watch your email for news!

We are always looking for help on our projects! If you would be interested in volunteering, please send us an email at FriendsOfCoonley@yahoo.com. We specifically need volunteers for the Fall Fun Fair, for fundraising in general, and also for an IT committee we are forming (to focus on the school/FOC website, auction software and member database software). If you are interested in any or all of the above – we’d love to hear from you.

If you’d like to be added to our mailing list, let us know at friendsofcoonley@yahoo.com.

Thanks for visiting our blog!

Coonley Receives $3.75M for Renovations
We’re thrilled to report that at his November 6, 2007 Community Meeting, Alderman Eugene Schulter of the 47th Ward announced that Coonley will receive $3.75 million for dramatic improvements to the interior and exterior of the school. These funds come from both the Western Avenue TIF funds (approximately $2.25 million) and CPS (approximately $1.5 million), and represent over a year’s worth of planning and negotiations. How will these funds be used?

  • A new relocated Student Lunchroom with a renovated and expanded kitchen
  • A new expanded Library Media Resource Center
  • A new state-of-the-art Science Lab
  • Lighting replacement in the halls and classrooms throughout the school
  • Bathroom upgrades and the addition of new bathrooms
  • An exterior illuminated Monument Sign with changeable letters
  • Renovation of the exterior grounds with significantly increased green space
  • And more…

What happens next?

Another Community Meeting will take place at the school on Thursday, November 15, at 7pm, with additional community meetings to follow. These community meetings provide an opportunity to hear more details about what is planned and to voice your input. The community’s participation in this process is valued, so please plan to attend.

This is truly an exciting time for Coonley School. We’re thrilled to have a school building that will now match the fantastic students, teachers, and administrators that have accomplished such dramatic improvements in the last 3 years. For more information please contact the school at 773-534-5140, or email friendsofcoonley@yahoo.com.

The Friends of Coonley School is an organization of parents, community members, teachers, and administrators dedicated to supporting the John C. Coonley School through our fundraising efforts. We recognize that great teachers and administrators build the best schools when they have the funds they need. Since our group formed in 2005, we have raised well over $50,000 to directly support Coonley! Our main fundraising efforts include an annual Silent Auction and a Fall Fun Fair on the school grounds. With the funds we’ve raised, the school has been able to purchase or implement:

  • Spanish classes once weekly for grades K-2 from Berlitz Kids
  • Art classes once monthly for grades K-4 from Abrakadoodle
  • Library / Media tracking software to catalog materials and identify needs in the collection
  • $5000 worth of new library books
  • New library furniture
  • New Pre-K furniture
  • Band instruments
  • PR materials for the school
  • And much, much more!

How Can I Become Involved?

We welcome the participation of everyone interested in supporting Coonley School. Our Board of Directors consists of seven members, four of which serve as officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). The outgoing board approves a new board each fall. Responsibilities of the board include attending monthly meetings (generally under 2 hours), voting on issues / expenditures, leading or serving on a committee for our key fundraising events, communicating with the Local School Council and Administration, and helping with volunteer activities. Serving on the board requires the greatest time commitment, but offers great rewards! Honorary Board members, often past members of the Board of Directors, are non-voting members that are invited to attend meetings and advise the Board.

Other opportunities include serving as a Committee Chair, a leadership role for an event (PR, decorations, entertainment, volunteers, etc.). Responsibilities include creation of the committee itself and communication with the Board regarding updates for the event. Committee members help in planning events and attend committee meetings set up by the chair. Finally, Volunteers donate their time for specific events (flyer distribution, day of events, and other special school projects). Volunteers are the backbone of our operation and are needed throughout the year!

If you are interested in finding out more about the Friends of Coonley School and how you can become involved, please join us for ourAnnual Meeting on Wednesday, October 10th at 6pm at the school. We also invite you to contact us atfriendsofcoonley@yahoo.com, or call the school at 773-534-5410. Thanks for your support!
